Lost in a Sea of Faces

Here's something that I wrote on the way to my grandparents' house from NY.

"I went to NY today, Philadelphia yesterday. There are so many different kinds of people in NY. There's so many oriental people there [and in Philadelphia]. I saw two blind people [one using a stick and the other using a guide dog]. In the subway station, I saw break dancers, a girl playing some sort of [American] Indian instrument that I know ends in 'ku', and a girl singing beautifully and playing the guitar.
On the subway I saw something I wanted to capture with my camera but I couldn't bring myself to do it--two people, a guy and agirl, lying down head-to-head asleep and dirty. I couldn't see their faces very well but I could tell they were adults. The guy had dark hair and wore light tannish boot shoes [not sure if that's the right term for them]. The girl had dark hair in dreadlocks, wore an oversized black coat [which she may have borrowed from the guy[, and striped, bright rainbow socks [the only brightly colored garments she wore]. They slept with their knees bent and crunched in toward themselves. The guy had his head propped up on his hands and both laid their head upon a black purse. A small bag with different flags of the world sat beneath the seat they were lying on. They slept the entire time we were on the subway [through every stop] except for when the guy stirred for a while." That image just struck me and I couldn't stop staring at them.

"Also, once while we were on the subway I saw a girl wearing a white t-shirt that read "If stress burned calories, I'd be in a size 5". Later, I began to understand even more why she wore it--NY can be a pretty stressful place. Wherever you go, whenever you go, there's a level of feeling rushed--'hurry, hurry, before you get run over by people/and taxi cabs'.
